The short answer is no, you cannot burn wood in a standard Aga. These iconic cookers were never designed to run on wood fuel, and attempting to burn wood in an unmodified Aga would be dangerous and ineffective. However, some older solid fuel models can be converted to burn wood, though it's a complex process with significant limitations.


We've removed hundreds of Agas over the years, and wood-burning conversions are among the most challenging situations we encounter. Let me explain why Agas and wood don't naturally mix, what conversion actually involves, and whether it's worth considering.

Agas were originally designed in 1922 to burn solid fuel like coke or anthracite, not wood. The fundamental design differences matter.


Wood burns differently from coal or coke. It produces more flame, burns faster, and creates different combustion patterns. An Aga's firebox, flue design, and heat distribution system are all optimised for slow-burning solid fuels that produce steady, consistent heat.


The cast iron construction and heat storage principle of an Aga relies on constant, controlled temperatures. Wood's variable burn rate makes maintaining these steady temperatures nearly impossible without modifications.

What Wood Conversion Actually Involves

Converting a solid fuel Aga to burn wood requires substantial modifications. Only pre-1970s solid fuel models are candidates, and even then, success isn't guaranteed.


The conversion process typically includes:

  • Installing new boiling plates with different air flow patterns

  • Modifying or replacing the firebox restrictors

  • Adjusting the flue damper system

  • Sometimes fitting a new riddling mechanism

  • Adding secondary air controls


A specialist engineer must assess whether your specific model can be converted. Two-oven solid fuel Agas are the most common candidates, but four-oven models present additional challenges.

You'll need to feed the fire every 2-3 hours during the day. Only properly seasoned hardwood with less than 20% moisture content will work. Softwood burns too quickly and produces excessive tar.

Expect to use 4-6 cubic metres of wood annually for cooking only, or 8-12 cubic metres if you're also heating water. That's considerably more storage space than coal or oil requires.

Wood-burning Agas need much more maintenance than their gas or oil counterparts.


The flue needs sweeping every three months during the burning season, compared to annually for other fuels. Ash removal is a daily task, and the firebox needs weekly cleaning to prevent clinker buildup.

The conversion components wear faster too. Expect to replace restrictors and baffles every 3-5 years, adding ongoing costs.


Better Alternatives to Consider

Before committing to wood conversion, consider these alternatives that work better with your Aga's design.
