Do Agas Need Extractor Fans?

The short answer is that electric Agas don't legally need extractor fans, but gas, oil and solid fuel models do need proper ventilation. However, we'd always recommend some form of extraction for any Aga, regardless of fuel type, to manage steam, cooking odours and moisture in your kitchen.

Electric Aga Ventilation Requirements
Electric Agas have the simplest ventilation requirements. Since they don't burn fuel, there's no legal requirement for extraction or ventilation under building regulations. They don't need a flue either.
However, electric Agas still produce steam and cooking smells just like any cooker. Without extraction, moisture can build up on windows and walls, potentially causing damp problems over time.
Most electric Aga owners choose to install an extractor hood for comfort rather than compliance. A standard kitchen extractor fan rated at 300-500m³/hr works perfectly for an electric model.
Gas and Oil Aga Ventilation Requirements
Gas and oil-fired Agas have strict ventilation requirements under UK building regulations. These models burn fuel and produce combustion gases, so proper ventilation is essential for safety.
For a gas or oil Aga, you need:
Permanent room ventilation (usually an airbrick or vent)
Either a flue system OR a powerful extractor hood
Minimum extraction rate of 20 air changes per hour
Carbon monoxide alarm installed in the kitchen
Annual safety checks by a Gas Safe or OFTEC engineer
The permanent ventilation ensures your Aga gets enough air for safe combustion. This is typically a 100cm² vent for gas models or larger for oil-fired units.
Extractor Hood vs Flue System
Traditional Agas came with built-in flue systems that vented combustion gases directly outside through the chimney or a balanced flue. Modern installations often use extractor hoods instead, which handle both combustion gases and cooking vapours.
Flue systems work silently and continuously, requiring no electricity. They're ideal if you have an existing chimney or want the traditional setup. The downside is they only remove combustion gases, not cooking steam or odours.
Extractor hoods offer more flexibility and better overall kitchen ventilation. They remove combustion gases, steam, and cooking smells in one system. Modern hoods designed for Agas typically extract 650-900m³/hr, well above the minimum requirement.
For gas and oil Agas, any extractor must be interlocked with the cooker. This safety feature automatically shuts off the gas supply if the extractor fails, preventing dangerous fume build-up.
Installation and Safety Considerations
Proper installation is crucial for safety. Gas and oil Aga ventilation must be installed by qualified engineers - Gas Safe registered for gas models, OFTEC registered for oil. They'll calculate the exact ventilation requirements based on your kitchen size and Aga model.

Never block existing vents when renovating your kitchen. We've seen dangerous situations where homeowners have unknowingly covered ventilation grilles during kitchen refits.
Position extractors centrally above your Aga, ideally 65-75cm from the hotplate surface. Too high and they won't extract effectively; too low and they'll get in your way.

Choosing the Right Extraction System

Downdraft extractors work well in modern kitchens where you don't want visible extraction. They pop up from the worktop behind your Aga when needed.

Whatever system you choose, ensure it's rated for continuous use. Agas run constantly, and do heat the room as well as cook, so extraction systems work harder than with conventional cookers.
Maintenance and Running Costs
Extraction systems for Agas need more frequent maintenance than those for standard cookers because they run continuously. Metal grease filters need cleaning every 2-4 weeks, while carbon filters in recirculating systems need replacing every 3-4 months.
Running costs vary by system type. A typical 700m³/hr extractor hood uses about 200W on full power. Running 12 hours daily costs roughly £20-30 monthly at current electricity rates.
Flue systems have no running costs but need annual cleaning. Budget £80-150 for professional flue cleaning, depending on your location and flue type.
Building Regulations and Compliance
Current UK building regulations (Approved Document J) specify minimum ventilation requirements for all heat-producing appliances. While electric Agas are exempt, gas and oil models must comply with strict standards.
For gas Agas under 70kW net input (which covers all domestic models), you need extraction providing at least 20 air changes per hour or a properly designed flue system. The room must also have permanent ventilation of at least 5cm² per kW of appliance input rating.
Oil-fired Agas follow similar rules but often need larger ventilation openings due to their higher heat output. Your OFTEC engineer will calculate exact requirements during installation.
