What It Costs to Remove an Aga, and the Extras to Budget For

Getting an Aga out of a kitchen is not a job for a couple of mates and a trolley. They are heavy, they come apart in a specific order, and most need disconnecting before anything is moved. So before you book anyone in, it helps to know what the work actually costs and what can quietly get added to the bill. We remove and relocate cast iron cookers across the UK, so here is a straight answer based on what these jobs really involve.

aga to be removed

How much does it cost to remove an Aga?

Professional Aga removal usually starts from around £300, which covers disconnecting the electric or oil supply, dismantling the cooker and taking it away. The final price depends on the model, your location and what sits beneath the cooker. Extras such as travel, disposal, plinth removal and VAT can push the figure higher.

That starting price assumes a fairly standard job with good access. If you want a firm number for your own kitchen, the quickest route is to send photos for a tailored aga removal quote, since the model and the setup make a real difference to the work involved.

What a standard Aga removal includes

Most straightforward removals cover the same core work. For the base price, you can generally expect:

  • Disconnecting the cooker from the electric or oil supply

  • Dismantling the Aga into manageable sections

  • Removing all the parts from your property

  • Clearing up dust and debris as we go

  • Responsible recycling or relocation of the cooker

The reason it cannot be a flat national price is that no two installations are identical. A two oven gas model on the ground floor with a side door nearby is a very different job from a four oven oil cooker at the back of a narrow galley kitchen.

What can be added on top of the price

This is where quotes vary, and it is worth understanding before you compare them. The common extras are:

  • Travel. Jobs a long way from the nearest engineer can carry a mileage or travel charge.

  • Disposal. If the cooker is not being relocated or sold on, responsible disposal and recycling may be charged separately.

  • VAT. Some quotes are shown before VAT, so always check whether the figure you have been given includes it.

  • Plinth or concrete slab removal. Many older Agas sit on a concrete base. Breaking out and removing that slab is a substantial extra job, not part of a basic removal.

  • Gas and water disconnection. Removal firms can usually handle electric and oil, but gas must be disconnected beforehand by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and any hot water connection by a plumber. Those are separate costs you arrange yourself.

Why an Aga can't simply be lifted out

A cast iron Aga can weigh several hundred kilograms, so it is taken apart rather than moved whole. The enamelled top, doors, lids and internal castings come off in sequence, which is why the work takes time and why it pays to use someone who has done it before.

Older cookers add complications. Many pre-1974 models are packed with insulating material such as vermiculite or Fuller's Earth, which makes them messier and slower to strip down. A small number of very early Agas can contain asbestos, which has to be dealt with by a specialist contractor under HSE guidance before any further work happens. None of this is a reason to panic, but it does explain why a proper quote depends on knowing your exact model.

How to get an accurate quote

The single most useful thing you can do is send clear photos: one of the whole cooker, one with the lids up showing the hinges, and one of the burner or controls. That lets us identify the model, spot anything unusual about the installation, and tell you whether it is a cooker we would remove for a fee or one worth buying from you.

From there you get a fixed, no-surprises figure rather than a vague estimate, with any extras like travel or plinth removal spelled out up front.
